2024 was a great year for movies. From Dune: Part 2 to Wicked: Part One, last year gave us some truly spectacular films. In fact, this decade has given us many great films, and it’s only halfway over! There are many exciting projects currently in development, and in this blog post I would like to share a few of the ones I’m most excited for over the next few years.
The first film I wish to showcase is Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, Dune: Messiah. The third film in this masterful science fiction franchise will be released in 2026, and I, for one, cannot wait! Since the release of Dune: Part 1 in 2021, this franchise has proven itself to be something truly special. In every scene and shot, you can see the incredible talent on display; Villeneuve has a clear vision, and he executes it flawlessly. The films are based on the book series by Frank Herbert, and this series is widely considered to be one of the greatest Sci-Fi stories ever written; many have called it “the Lord of the Rings of the Sci-Fi genre”. I find that to be a fitting comparison, because, like Lord of the Rings, Dune transports you to another time and place, with epic battles and in-depth world building. The music is awesome as well, and composer Hans Zimmer is able to add another layer of immersion to an already immersive story. Be on the lookout for Dune: Messiah, which is currently slated to release in 2026!
The next film I would like to showcase is Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, which is an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan is, by far, one of the most talented and celebrated filmmakers of the 21st century. In case you don’t recognize his name, you will most likely recognize at least a few of Nolan’s films, which include Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and, most recently, Oppenheimer (2023), which won Best Picture at the Oscars. Many people were wondering what Nolan could possibly do to top himself again, and–in typical Nolan fashion–he has decided to make an extremely ambitious film. If an adaptation of this epic, classic story doesn’t interest you, then maybe the cast will. With names such as Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson, this cast is nothing less than star studded, and it’s no doubt they will all give amazing performances. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is set to release in 2026, and I can’t wait!
Finally, my most anticipated upcoming release is the only one on this list that is scheduled to release this year, and that is Wicked: For Good. I am a huge Wicked fan, and so when I heard that it was finally being turned into a movie, I was ecstatic. Then, I heard that it would be split into two parts, and that made me a bit nervous, since, in my mind, the words “two parts” usually equate to “cash grab”. Having seen Wicked: Part One, however, and absolutely loving it, I am not as nervous about this decision as I had been. In my opinion, the first part was handled so incredibly well that I have no doubt that the second part will be just as good. Since the first part focused on the first act of the musical, the second part will naturally focus on the second act, which is darker and more dramatic than its predecessor. It has also been confirmed that a few new songs will be included in this film, which would normally make me nervous, but since Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the original music for the Broadway musical, is involved in the writing process for these songs, I think they will be great! Overall, the quality of the first film has me very excited for its sequel. Don’t miss Wicked: For Good, which is currently slated to release in November 2025.
From Sci-Fi epics and tales of ancient mythology to fantasy musicals, it looks like the next few years will be filled with some amazing movies!
